We may realise these aims through:
using evidence-based practice to challenge stereotypes and discrimination against deafness and hearing loss
maintaining a forum for the exchange of expert knowledge and skills
providing and encouraging education, training and placement opportunities related to deafness and hearing loss
promoting research which enhances the lives of people who are deaf or who have lost some hearing
offering a forum for peer supervision and opportunities for CPD
collaborating with professional and voluntary groups
advising and influencing policy and services
supporting members of the SIG and its aims at local, national and international levels
The benefit of the group to its members is a high calibre of challenging but supportive peer interaction. Given that the field of mental health and deafness is small it is often the case that professionals work in some degree of isolation. Professional and personal support from such a group benefits the individual and the recipients of their work. It also provides opportunities for continuing professional development and peer supervision satisfying many of the requirements of the British Psychological Society and the Health Professions Council.
