Applied Psychology and Deafness
Special Interest Group

AIMS

The overall aim of the group is to publicise the importance of psychological issues related to the experience of deafness and hearing loss, and to provide a high standard of professional peer support and education to psychologists working with d/Deaf people. We also aim to maintain a high level of scientific rigour and that, where possible, we utilize evidence-based information.

We may realise these aims through:

MEMBERSHIP

Membership of the special interest group is open to anyone who is currently working or training towards, applying psychological knowledge to aspects of deafness. Potential members need to be voted towards membership by two existing members of the SIG.

The benefit of the group to its members is a high calibre of challenging but supportive peer interaction. Given that the field of mental health and deafness is small it is often the case that professionals work in some degree of isolation. Professional and personal support from such a group benefits the individual and the recipients of their work. It also provides opportunities for continuing professional development and peer supervision satisfying many of the requirements of the British Psychological Society and the Health Professions Council.
